About the Event
The panel will delve into the evolving role of the Poet Laureate as an artistic ambassador—exploring how poetry can serve as a civic voice, a platform for advocacy, and a bridge between communities and institutions. Panelists will reflect on their own experiences in the role and discuss how poetry can be used to elevate public discourse, promote social justice, and celebrate cultural diversity.
The Calgary Poet Laureate position, established on July 26, 2011, underscores the city’s deep commitment to fostering creativity and cultural dialogue. Supported by the Calgary Foundation and the Calgary Public Library, the program appoints a poet every two years to create literary work that reflects the life of the city and its people. Poet Laureates are invited to present at civic events, engage in community outreach, and use poetry as a tool for connection and transformation across Calgary’s diverse communities.
