Publisher: Frontenac House (2019)
ISBN: 978-1927823996

A Love Letter to Emily C, by Sheri-D Wilson, explores the life, times and milestones of Canadian icon and artist Emily Carr. Humorous and moving, this play is a dialogue between Carr and her monkey Woo, as Carr unravels her life. Sheri-D Wilson, D. Litt—Poet Laureate of Calgary, is the award-winning author of eleven books, the creator of four short films, and has released four albums which combine music and poetry. She is known for her electric performance-style, making her a favourite of festivals around the world. She has read, performed and taught in festivals across Canada, USA, UK, France, Spain, Belgium, Mexico, and South Africa. Sheri-D says, “I wanted to write a play about and for one of my favourite Canadian artists, Emily Carr. And in the same way that she envisioned doing in her art, I wanted the piece to echo with the beauty and wonder, we feel in nature…”

Wilson is Calgary’s current poet laureate so it should come as no surprise that, although A Love Letter is not written in verse, it is decidedly poetic in nature. Much of it is lyrical and ethereal and it has the feel of storytelling rather than drama.
